This year WAFRY havce decided to take on some extra work and make the Competetion bigger and better! There will be four heats run at shows through-out the State, with first and second place from each show making it into the state final to be held at the Dowerin Field Days in August 2009.

The Heats will be held as follows;
Heat One - Saturday 6th September at the Bruce Rock Show
Heat Two - Friday 19th September at the Mingenew Lions Mid-West Expo
Heat Three - Saturday 25th October at the Brunswick Show
Heat Four - Friday 6th March at the Wagin Wollorama

It is a concept being adopted by many of the other states and the NT following a very successful National Compeittion in WA in 2006, which is now once again to be held in WA in September 2009.

The Young Farmer Competition is aspiring to not only to reward the young farmer who wins on the day but to promote roles models and agriculture as an exciting and viable career option to all young people.

The aims of the competition are:

  • Lift the profile of young people in agriculture;
  • Allow young farmers to test their agricultural knowledge and skills in a challenging environment;
  • Facilitate discussion among young people from agricultural industries by providing the opportunity to network among other young farmers;
  • Provide an opportunity for young people show initiative and problem solving skills, traits that are required from our future rural leaders; and
  • For organisers (WA Federation of Rural Youth members) to gain practical skills in event management, media interaction and leadership.

The format of the competition is designed to test a range of skills directly related to farming with a mix of practical skills, business skills and general agricultural knowledge which are important for a successful farming enterprise.  These skills are presented as a series of modules completed in a round-robin format.  Modules in the past have included:

  • Livestock judging and assessment
  • General and agricultural knowledge
  • Livestock handing and husbandry
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Budgeting and farm finance
  • First aid
  • Machinery operation and calibration
  • Domestic skills
  • Public speaking
  • Workshop skills
  • Fencing
  • Weeds and seeds

At there conclusion of the competition there is a Presentation Sundowner to give sponsors and competitors an opportunity to meet and network.  The winner and runner-up those with the highest and second highest tally at the end of the day.  Winners of the individual modules are also rewarded.  We hope to attract friends and family of our competitors, other young people, sponsors and media represenatives to the Sundowner and view it as an integral part of promoting the competition.
